Google Gauges Site Authority By Visits

I've just finished listening to the Google UK Chief Matt Brittin on Jeremy Vine's Radio 2 Show today. Apart from Jeremy being obsessed with user privacy, a notable statement was from the Brittin where he stated that they gauge site authority by visits. Now I hope I didn't misshear it as it'd make me look a plonker. But I'm absolutely sure that's what he said. You can double check on the BBC iPlayer later on today.

Let's hope he got it wrong, or I'll start buying the cheapest, nastiest traffic going ;-)

Obviously he was refering to visits from Google, and they DO track visits, bounce rates and traffic for a while as you can see in ad planne, so thats not really surprising news

I expect that they judge the quality of the traffic as well as the quantity so I wouldn't run off and buy up traffic in any bad neighborhoods.

What many don't realize is the amount of information and power Google has especially over ecommerce businesses that use Google Analytics or AdWords conversion tracking.

They know what keywords convert, who visits your site, what they look at, what they buy...

They control where you appear in their organic listings, where your ppc ads are, and where all the referring pages on all the other sites are ranked that send you traffic.

Am I the only one that sees allowing monopolies as potentially dangerous?
