Merchants: Find a Royal Mail & TNT Alternative

I've started up a forum about the problems consumers and businesses have with courier companies - it's called Delivery Hell.

As part of it I blog about the industry. Despite not getting round to doing the template yet, I'm adding content and have regular readers. As part of doing it I found out that there's likely to be a strike by Royal Mail and Parcel Force workers which would obviously impact on the fulfilment of merchant orders.

It won't only affect these two delivery options but also, it appears, TNT who sometimes use Royal Mail to complete delivery.

So I've got two requests for merchants:
  1. Could you prepare an alternative to Royal Mail, Parcel Force and TNT just in case you need to switch over in face of a strike.
  2. Add your details to the section for merchants to list which couriers you use so consumers can make sure their purchases will be delivered. You can do that here.

It's not quite as simple as just "switching over". The prices that merchants get from the Royal Mail will be wayyyyy below what a courier will charge. Customers may prefer to wait for the one-day strike to be over than pay a £20+ courier charge...

I don't understand how it helps customers for merchants to all post their courier information in your site. Isn't it more helpful for it to be shown on the merchants own site at the point of purchase?

Cheers Richard.

The concept is for people that have a real dislike for a courier could find out which merchants don't use them for any given product category i.e. I want to buy a new stereo and I see that xyz merchant uses DHL rather than City Link I'd use them.

The idea is that consumers rather than merchants added the info but thought some may want to.

Also having a merchant/courier section would allow me to nonetize the forum in the future - which, in truth, is the "reason for being".
